Adam Clarke was one of the most influential Methodists of the generation after Wesley. Thanks to this fine book by Greg Van Dussen we can once again benefit from Clarke’s keen Scriptural insight on eternity. Here we learn not only about the life to come but how eternity is experienced in this present life, a concept central to Wesley’s own theology. We also benefit from Van Dussen’s own analysis and at times critique. I hope this book will be widely read and recommend it highly.

The eighteenth-century Methodist divine and scholar Adam Clarke was self-taught in at least ten ancient and modern languages and knowledgeable with the corpus of Christian thought. His erudition spawned a Bible commentary still in print today. However, his linguistic work was merely a prologue to Clarke’s real work: living and preaching the eternal life promised in Christian discipleship. In this volume Dr. Van Dussen, drawing on the insight of protestant, Roman Catholic, and Orthodox theologians, explores Clarke’s expansive view that for all Christians eternity begins now.
